A recent randomized controlled trial looked at the results of resistance training along with collagen (vs whey and placebo) and its effects on strength and body mass.
Because of the resistance training, everyone in the study improved strength. They all also improved their overall body composition – with more lean body mass (including muscle) and less fat mass.
What’s interesting is that the group taking collagen experienced a greater increase in lean body mass and a greater decrease in fat mass than the other groups – while there was no difference in the whey protein group.
I would have guessed the whey protein group would have seen more muscle mass – because it has more of the amino acids to promote muscle growth.
Actions You Can Take
If your goal is building muscle mass, burning fat and improving overall body composition, then resistance training is always a good approach.
If you want to enhance these benefits then supplementing with collagen can be beneficial (as well as many other benefits you’ll get like healthy skin, flexible joints and strong bones).
If you really want to focus on muscle growth, you may as well supplement with both whey and collagen while focusing on protein-rich foods.
What I Do
I focus on whole foods first by getting collagen from things like bone broth, animal skins, non-muscle meats (like tendon, tripe, oxtail and knuckle), egg yolk, and eggshell membranes.

The Setpoint Diet
I’m reading The Setpoint Diet, which, as you can guess is all about focusing on lowering your so-called “setpoint” – rather than focusing so much on weight.
This is all well and good but the question then arises:
How do we know (or measure) our setpoint?
People with a low setpoint can get away with eating just about anything without gaining weight. So I guess if you’re able to eat “bad” foods and not gain weight, you’re successfully lowering your setpoint.
Of course this can easily backfire if you see the scale going back up!
I think I have found a way to objectively measure the success… that’s MUCH more effective than weight, calories and body measurements.
