Biohacking Social #24 – Biohackers Chiang Mai

During the Biohackers Chiang Mai Biohacking Social, we touched on a LOT of different biohacking topics during our meetup, from vaccinations to orgasms, and MANY topics in between.

Wait a sec! What is biohacking and a biohacking social?

Good question. It’s something I covered in an article after our first biohacking social meetup – so you can click to learn more.

Biohacking Topics

You’ll learn more about vaccinations and orgasms soon enough. But first, here are some of the things we discussed:

[+] Coffee and Butter

[+] Health Issues

[+] Orgasms

[+] Human / child development

[+] Breathwork

[+] Cold Therapy

[+] Books and other resources

How do you take your coffee – with butter?

Of course any modern biohacking meetup isn’t complete with some talk of butter and coffee!

It was recommended not to store your coffee beans in the refrigerator or freezer. This idea, however, is up for debate. The problem seems to be with condensation and the beans absorbing that moisture. If you do freeze your beans, you’ll want to make sure they are dry in an airtight container. You can read more about storing your coffee here.

As for butter, some people shared their favorites – some based on flavor, and other based on quality / health (like butter from grass-fed, pastured cows, eg).

I personally go for Anchor butter from New Zealand – and get single origin coffee from the highlands.

Are you biohacking your health problems?

A few health issues were discussed including ulcerative colitis, hashimotos and dermatitis. Certainly your environment (including the foods you eat) will play a role in these health issues – which is a big reason to get into biohacking and thereby take control of your own health.

Also asked and discussed was:

Why is there so much sexual dysfunction in today’s youth?

More on this later…

Where does your mind go when you hear the word “orgasm”?

We had a guest who was a bit of an expert on the topic. In fact, she’s running workshops and writing a book. This definitely raised a lot of curiosity in the group!

How do you raise kids the right (healthy) way?

This was in response to the question above:

Why is there so much sexual dysfunction in today’s youth?

I think that the response was unexpected and surprised many of us so-called biohackers. The reason that was given was based on child development – with one reason being that parents often force potty training on their children too early and this may affect sexual function later on in life. Who knew?!

This article explains some of the dangers of early potty training.

Somewhat similar to this, it seems that there may be some negative consequences when babies are pushed to walk too soon. The way I understood, if they don’t spend enough practice crawling first, they don’t fully develop their fascia and its corresponding movement abilities.

Then there are vaccinations. It was suggested that vaccinations are beneficial; however, how they are administered can be traumatic – especially for kids. It makes sense when you think of some big stranger poking things into your body.

Now I’m wondering if that flu shot I got way back in 2nd grade was traumatizing not just because I got really sick. Maybe it was how it was administered as well. Hmm…

Can you get high on your own breath?

Of course you can! That was a rhetorical question 😉

That is, if you know about “the Iceman” Wim Hof. He’s getting more and more recognition not just for his feats of withstanding cold, but also for breathing and breathwork.

We learned a bit more about how the breathwork works and even practiced a bit.

I’m diving ever deeper into the world of breathwork (currently reading the book Oxygen Advantage) so I’m happy to share what I’ve discovered (in addition to Wim Hof and other breath practices).

Can you cure yourself in the cold?

We already discussed Wim Hof. He teaches people how to tolerate extreme cold by preparing them and calming them down beforehand – basically alleviating the stress response we get (when stepping into an ice cold shower, eg).

What about using cold to treat your body after sports – like is commonly done for professional athletes when they hop in a tub of ice water after a big competition? It turns out that, although it numbs the pain, it can be counterproductive (and even damaging) to use ice in these situations.

Instead, a better treatment may be to go back and forth (contrasting) between hot and cold.

Also worth mentioning… You burn more fat when you practice cold therapy.

What else can you biohack?

Other topics were mentioned and discussed. Here are a few resources you may want to check out:
