Back to Resistant Starch for Weight Loss…
As mentioned above, some of our students (along with many others) use resistant starch to help with weight loss – as well as improved insulin sensitivity, lower blood sugar levels, reduced appetite and various benefits for digestion.
So, when I came across this meta-analysis on how resistant starch helps with weight loss, I dove in to understand the results…
But first you may wonder:
What is resistant starch?
A lot of people are getting on the resistant starch bandwagon without really understanding what it is or how it works so I’ll try to quickly explain in simple terms…
Resistant starch is the starch that your body doesn’t digest.
And, when it reaches your colon, it ferments and becomes food for (what we might call “friendly”) bacteria forming several compounds, including gases and short-chain fatty acids, most notably butyrate which feeds the cells that line the colon.Â
There are different types of resistant starch found in grains, seeds, legumes, raw potatoes, green (unripe) bananas. You can create your own resistant starch by cooking and cooling starchy foods (like rice).
What about the weight loss studies?
The studies show that resistant starch (from things like raw potatoes and raw bananas) suppresses appetite.
However… it is worth keeping in mind that at least 50% of the trials were assessed as having an unclear or high risk of bias in 3 of the 6 domains of the risk of bias assessment.
My takeaway
With the benefits we see from various studies around resistant starch, it’s certainly something to try adding to your diet to find out how it can help you with your weight loss and health goals.
