Biohacking Social #32 – Biohackers Chiang Mai

During the Biohackers Chiang Mai Biohacking Social, we discussed a LOT of different biohacking topics, from health problems like your body composition and depression to health solutions like nutrition and psychedelics, and MANY topics in between.

Wait a sec! What is biohacking and a biohacking social?

Good question. It’s something I covered in an article after our first biohacking social meetup – so you can click to learn more.

Biohacking Topics

You’ll learn more about psychedelics for your health soon enough. But first, here are some of the things we discussed:

[+] What’s your health problem?
Is it your body composition, Lyme disease, chronic illness, depression, anxiety, PCOS, High School Biology,  or a dopamine deficiency?

[+] What are your health solutions?
Is it paleo, primal, vegan, keto, fasting, neurobiology, psychedelics, frog medicine, triphala, more carbs (before your period), and Adderall?

[+] Who can help you?
Health resources: David Wolf, Mark Sisson, Dr Mercola, Dr Axe and Dr Berg.

What’s your health problem?

Is it your body composition, Lyme disease, chronic illness, depression, anxiety, PCOS, High School Biology,  or a dopamine deficiency?

These are some of the health problems we discussed during the biohacking social. Here are some resources for you on these subjects…

Improving your “body composition” generally means that you want to burn fat and build muscle. How you go about doing that is with a combination of calorie restriction and exercise.

Where people sometimes fail is doing too much of both at the same time. If you’re starving yourself while over-exercising (especially cardio) then you’re probably adding unneeded stress to your body.

My simple recommendation: Intermittent Fasting with Resistance Training. When you train hard, you’ll want to make sure you’re getting a surplus of calories to build muscle. When you’re not training hard, you’ll want a caloric deficit so that you burn fat.

Nerd Fitness has a great explanation on how you can burn fat and build muscle

Lyme disease is something that seems to ruin people’s health. Check out this biohacker’s experience overcoming Lyme.

Similarly, here’s a story of someone biohacking depression with the sun

Although it’s not specific to PCOS, this woman gives a great perspective on biohacking for women.

Saturated fat is still bad for you?! Yes, it’s sad to see that high school students still learn to avoid saturated fats (like animal fats and coconut oil) and to instead use polyunsaturated fats (like canola, safflower and soy oils).

Finally, the last problem was about dopamine deficiency and all the symptoms we see – primarily a lack of energy and motivation.

Enough with all of these problems!

What are your health solutions?
Is it paleo, primal, vegan, keto, fasting, neurobiology, psychedelics, frog medicine, triphala, more carbs (before your period), and Adderall?

As usual, some different nutritional and dietary approaches to health we’re discussed including the usual suspects like paleo, primal, vegan, keto and fasting (which is technically the opposite of diet and nutrition – but people commonly think of not eating as part of their “diet”).

Here’s a page with quick definitions for the different diets, as well as one person’s experience. I disagree with the strict definition of Intermittent Fasting given – and strongly believe that some form of fasting (generally more than 12 hours) is good for EVERYONE.

Kambo is the frog medicine discussed that has been reported to help people with Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, cancer, infertility, chronic pain, depression, anxiety, migraines, infections, and addiction

Triphala is an ancient herbal remedy with antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antibacterial effects. Triphala may have various health benefits, such as improving oral and digestive health and supporting skin healing.

Should you eat more carbs before your period? Some research suggests that changes in the levels of the hormones estrogen and progesterone cause cravings for foods rich in carbohydrates and sugars before a period. Is this “good” or “bad”? Read the article. And then you decide.

The short-term benefits of Adderall are scientific but not secret: It’s an amphetamine, so it raises your dopamine and norepinephrine levels throughout your brain. When Adderall hits the brain in the right spots, the result is usually beneficial: better focus, better wakefulness, less impulsivity and less depression.

Those are some health solutions. Now on to…

Who can help you?

Some health resources mentioned were David Wolfe, Mark Sisson, Dr Mercola, Dr Axe and Dr Berg.

I’ll let you do your own research on these guys. I’m a big fan of the last four and often search Mercola’s website for all things health and wellness; and tap into Dr Berg for videos on fasting and ketosis (which are especially useful during the Master Faster DETOX challenge).

What about you?

What are your thoughts and experiences with body composition, Lyme disease, chronic illness, depression, anxiety, PCOS, High School Biology, a dopamine deficiency, paleo, primal, vegan, keto, fasting, neurobiology, psychedelics, frog medicine, triphala, more carbs (before your period), Adderall, David Wolfe, Mark Sisson, Dr Mercola, Dr Axe and Dr Berg?
