During the Biohackers Chiang Mai Biohacking Social, we touched on a LOT of different biohacking topics during our meetup. Things like:
EMF, water, deuterium, exercise, sauna, red and infrared light, yoga, meditation, food, alcohol, fasting, restaurants in Chiang Mai, Bulletproof diet and coffee, breathing, energy, focus, longevity, light, and sleep.
I’ll cover some of them here and offer some more information in case you want to learn more. (Please leave your own feedback and suggestions.)
If you’re new to this, you might be thinking:
Wait a sec! What is biohacking and a biohacking social?
Good question. And it’s something I covered in an article after our first biohacking social meetup – so you can click to learn more.
Biohackers social meetup summary
There were 7 of us biohackers who met at Basecamp (where you can get Bulletproof Coffee!). We all shared a bit of our stories around biohacking – from simply talking about the foods we eat to deeper discussion into the things we can do to avoid harmful EMFs.
If you don’t know what that last part means, don’t worry. I’ll explain and give you a reference to an excellent guide on the topic…
Hack your light.
We talked a bit about light – especially about mitigating the harmful effects of blue light (or what Dave Asprey fittingly calls “junk light”).
Some suggestions that come up were to wear blue light blocking glasses, use incandescent and amber/red lights, use apps to block blue light (like iris), and expose your body to the sun.
Dave Asprey describes the problem and solutions – with Bulletproof ways to hack light to optimize your energy, mood and performance.
Where do you find the healthiest water in Chiang Mai?
If you search on the internet for clean water in Thailand, you’ll find a lot of information on what you can do to avoid getting sick.
While that’s certainly good to know, for us biohackers, that’s not nearly enough. We want water that’s going to give us energy, support our immune systems and maybe even make us live longer. Thus the question:
Where do you find the healthiest water in Chiang Mai?
The simple answer that came up was to use reverse osmosis (RO) filters because these filter pretty much everything out of the water. This is the good news. The problem is that your water has no minerals and is essentially “dead”.
You can learn more on filtering your drinking water here.
To bring your RO water back to life, you can add some high quality salt (like Celtic sea salt) and lemon or lime.
Or, you can drink mineral water. Like Dave Asprey, in his article on the benefits of mineral water, I like Pellegrino but it’s quite expensive here.
Thus I’m searching for a better option. I’ve found that we do have natural springs where water is harvested and bottled.
…bottles which are identified with the phrase “100% natural mineral water” are often bottled here in Chiang Mai province. The mountainous districts of Fang, Mae Rim, and Chiang Dao are where popular brands with French names like Mont Fluer, Minéré, Aura, and Purra are bottled with limited human interference.
The recommendation from a great article on drinking water in Chiang Mai is getting water delivered to your door from a company called Glacier.
(Unfortunately the bottled water companies offering delivery service have no websites and seem to still be living in the stone age when it comes to communication technologies.)
Look out for harmful EMFs!
If you don’t know about the potential harms of EMFs, you’re in for quite a surprise. I jokingly say to look out for them because you can’t actually see them (or smell or feel them).
They are all of the electric and magnetic waves – not just filling our airspace, but also passing through our bodies and affecting us on a deep cellular level.
We talked about things you can do to mitigate the harmful effects – like turn off WiFi, turn off electricity at the source, avoid light dimmers, use airplane mode on your devices, use a butane cooking stove, get an EMF meter/detector, or use an AM radio (video).
You can learn about the very basics of EMF, as well as things you can do to protect yourself in this Bulletproof article here.
If you want a deeper dive, I highly recommend the book I’m currently reading on the topic, called, The Non-Tinfoil Guide to EMFs: How to Fix Our Stupid Use of Technology. So far it’s an entertaining read. Also, it turns out that the author, Nicolas Pineault, is a fellow digital nomad who was in Thailand just a few years ago.
What about food?
Because we already talk about food so much that I’ll try to keep this short (but not too sweet!). We talked about vegan and vegetarian diets, eating local, farm to table, eating just one meal per day (OMAD), and the carnivore diet.
We talked about fish and toxins. Generally to avoid toxins, it’s best to avoid larger fish and instead opt for smaller, wild caught fish, like sardines, mackerel and anchovies.
We talked about the benefits of not drinking alcohol.
Then there’s the radical idea of not eating at all, better known as fasting.
We talked about avoiding plastics for food containers and cooking and using stainless steel and glass (or ceramic).
A couple of restaurant suggestions came up: Hanawa for their all-you-can eat special (be sure to ask for the one that’s 459 baht). And Kantary Hills
I shared the Bulletproof Diet Roadmap. In my (biased!) opinion it’s the best visual for understanding healthy and unhealthy foods. You can download your copy of the Bulletproof Diet roadmap here – or ask me for one of the posters.
Connect with people – starting with you.
We again talked about the power of connecting with others. And we also talked about connecting with yourself through things like meditation. You can get apps to help with meditation and there are all different types these days.
From a biohacking perspective, I recommend either getting the Muse headset or the Emwave – both of which will give you (bio) feedback on your practice.
Do you feel like you should meditate?
With all the interest in meditation these days, you may feel pressured into thinking you should meditate.
If this is you, don’t worry and no, you don’t need to meditate. But do read this article to understand why – and other things you can do.
Can We End the Meditation Madness?
