Can you eat fat to burn fat?
Many people are still holding on to the idea that, if they eat fat, they will get fat. As we see more people losing weight on the keto diet (where people get up to 80% of their calories from fat!), this simply is not always true.
But… Is the reverse true? That is… are these people on keto losing weight because they are eating more fat?
You’ll learn more about eating fat to burn fat soon enough. But first…

Back to Eating Fat for Weight Loss…
As you may have heard by now (and perhaps even tried yourself), eating more fat is becoming increasingly more popular as a way to be more healthy and to lose weight.
But… What does the science say?
Eat Less Fat
A recent systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials that lasted at least six months showed that eating less fat resulted in a small mean bodyweight reduction of 1.4 kilograms (3.1 pounds), and the more dietary fat was reduced, the more weight loss resulted.
In other words, if you eat less fat, you will lose weight.
But… A low fat intake was defined as reduction of fat to less than 30% of calories and a high fat intake was defined as more than 30% of calories. Keto-like diets, or those designed to increase protein and fat intake and minimize carbohydrate intake were excluded from the review.
Considering that keto dieters get upwards of 80% of their calories from fat, it seems there’s a LOT more to investigate…
Eat Less Carbs
When you take into account high fat, low carb diets, things look a bit different:
Low-fat and low-carb diets produce similar weight-loss results, at least in long-term clinical trials. Both types of diet work mostly because the trials’ participants reduce their intake of calories, not just of carbs or fat, and because eating less carbohydrate or fat usually results in eating more protein. – https://examine.com/nutrition/eating-fat-make-you-fat/
Eat Less Calories
So it seems it’s simply a matter of “calories in; calories out”?
Not so fast… We’ve seen that an excess of carbohydrates raise triglycerides and likely contribute to many modern diseases like heart disease, diabetes, Alzheimer’s, and cancer.
Furthermore…
Fat Supports Overall Health – including Weight Loss
We can find that fat and cholesterol improve your mood, reverse diabetes, are vital for the formation and maintenance of cell walls, are used by nerve cells as insulation, are used it to make bile to improve digestion, are a precursor to Vitamin D, are needed for healthy hormones, help support the immune system (by improving t-cell signaling and fighting inflammation), are necessary for the absorption of fats and fat-soluble vitamins (A,D, E and K), help regulate circadian rhythms (thus also weight, mental health and more), serve as an antioxidant in the body, and are the main dietary source of the b-vitamin choline (which is vital for the brain, liver and nervous system).
So, as you can see, if you want to optimize health and lose weight in a healthy way, you’ll make sure you’re getting enough fat in your diet!
Exercise for Weight Loss
Can you exercise to lose weight?
Yes and no. I discussed this question and offered some answers to exercise and weight loss, along with 2 other weight loss myths, in a previous update.
Here I’ll share some of my own experiences with exercise – doing pistol squats and rope training.
Pistol Squats for Weight Loss
I recently got back into pistol squat training and am now able to do them without assistance (albeit with poor form!).
What are pistol squats?
Simply put, they are single-leg squats. They take a good combination of strength, balance, and flexibility to accomplish. My strength is good but I’m lacking a bit in the other parts – especially flexibility.

Rope Training for Weight Loss
A friend of mine turned me on to this interesting new trend in rope training in which you hold a rope just like you would a jump rope – but you don’t jump!
Instead you swing the rope around in different ways. I don’t have my own videos yet, but I’ve been able to do what’s called the Dragon Roll and the Sneak.
But… what about weight loss doing Pistol Squats and Rope Training?
Well… That was a bit of a trick…
You see, if you’re looking to lose weight, exercise can certainly help.
However, if you know me, you already know that I strongly support fasting as the most simple, effective and healthy way to lose weight.
Frozen Shoulder
What is “frozen shoulder”?
Good question. I hadn’t heard about it until finding a name for what I’ve been experiencing for the past 2 months!
From my experience, I get sharp pains in my shoulder when I left my arm in certain ways. With the pain, I eventually learn not to move it beyond the initial pain. Therefore, it’s said to be “frozen”.
The bad news.
The bad news was finding recovery time estimates ranging up to 3 years and some saying the minimum is 1 year. WTF?!
I first experienced the pain one day and assumed I must have just slept on my shoulder in a bad way.
But after I thought it was getting better, I decided to get back to work and and was sawing a piece of wood for about 30 minutes non-stop.
Not long after my shoulder was worse than ever – with more pain and less range of motion. Doh.
The good news.
I’ve been doing research and have a list of many exercises I’ve been doing. I also injected peptides, I do ice baths, breathwork and more.
It’s definitely better. Sometimes I think it’s completely healed. But then the pain comes back.
I’ll soon add consistent light therapy to my arsenal and look forward to some positive results. (Using the FlexBEAM.)
In the News
Here’s an interesting article I’ve read recently that may interest you too…
Grass fed vs Grain fed Beef
If you’re confused about the quality of beef available these days, you’re not alone.
I research this stuff quite a bit and still get confused. Thankfully, this article clears up a lot of the confusion about the pros and cons of grass-fed and grain-fed beef.
The takeaways:
(1) If you’re eating lean beef (like muscle meat) then there’s not going to be much difference in the nutrition.
(2) If you’re eating fatty cuts and organs, you’re best bet is with grass-fed because it has more nutrients and less anti-nutrients.
(3) If you’re concerned about the environment and the pathetic state of agriculture, find a farmer and butcher you can trust.
