What happens when you combine fasting with frog venom (kambo)?
That’s right. I may have accidentally discovered a new biohack that makes fasting easier – and more effective – when you stack it with kambo.
You’ll learn more about Fasting with Frog Venom soon enough. But first…

Back to Fasting with Frog Venom…
.
Why fasting and frog venom?!
Fasting is widely used for weight loss, detox, and MUCH more.
Similarly, Kambo is used for detox – as an (alternative) intervention for addiction, Alzheimer’s, anxiety, cancer, chronic pain, depression, diabetes, hepatitis, HIV / AIDS, infections, infertility, rheumatism, and vascular conditions (and much more).
.
My experience with Kambo and Fasting
I hadn’t really planned to fast (for 4 days) nor had I planned to combine it with Kambo.
However, the two opportunities came together when I joined an extended GlobalFast online with others around the world… and then scheduled a Kambo ceremony with a local guide.
I’ve written about my insights and experiences with extended fasts in the past so I’ll skip right ahead to the new Kambo experience…
.
My Kambo Experience
Because the Kambo ceremony required a “clean” diet a few days in advance, as well as at least 12 hours of fasting, I decided I would wait to break my fast until after the ceremony.
I went into the Kambo ceremony on the morning of the 4th day of my fast feeling tired and lethargic – pretty much the usual feelings I have fasting for multiple days.
Our guide gave us the basic run-down of what to expect during the ceremony and then we got started after a short meditation.
.
The Acute Effects of Kambo
Our guide burned 3 small spots on my left shoulder, told me to start drinking (chugging!) water, and then applied the venom (which he explained isn’t really venom or poison because it doesn’t kill cells in our bodies).
Sitting on the floor of his beautiful jungle home with my full glass of water, barf bucket in front of me and bathroom behind, I tried to keep an open mind as I awaited the effects and feelings of the kambo to kick in…
Just as he explained, I felt hot and nauseous – slightly different from flu symptoms with sensations and urges in my stomach to poo and eventually to puke…
This was the expectation and pretty much the goal as I understood it: drink as much water as possible so that you vomit 3 times.
.
Easier said than done.
I wasn’t thirsty and, after forcefully chugging more and more water, I was quickly beginning to hate drinking water!
I got one successful purge after a few minutes, went to the bathroom to poo and back to drinking more water.
To say the experience was uncomfortable is an understatement. And to say that it was outright painful is an overstatement.
I was asking myself, “Why am I doing this?!” And telling myself, “Never again. It’s not worth it.”
I gave up on my body naturally succumbing to the ill feelings and purging on its own. So I stuck my finger down my throat and got maybe a liter of fluid out in this multi-purge as I groaned.
.
I felt a bit of relief after.
But then I was encouraged to drink even more water for another purge.
I drank more water. But I was done. I didn’t want to puke again.
Our guide removed the kambo venom… and eventually was okay with me not getting out a third and final purge.
Just as described, once removed, the acute effects of the kambo faded.
.
Then there were the Kambo after-effects…
Although I had been fasting for over 3 days, there was a noticeable shift in my mindset and energy. More specific:
- I was not interested in food.
- I had more energy and focus.
- I felt more optimistic.
It seems that this intervention had given me a bit of a boost during my fast that I wasn’t expecting.
Can we call Kambo a way to biohack your fast to make it more effective?
Based on my experience, I say yes. I think that, although I broke my fast later that day, I could have more easily went on fasting thereby reaping the rewards of ketosis, cellular autophagy, increased stem cells, and more.
Can we say Kambo is a way to make fasting easier?
No and Yes. I would definitely say going through the suffering of the acute kambo effects aren’t worth it in order to get the gains from fasting that then made it easier.Â
If you want to biohack your fast, there are easier ways, like MCT Oil and Ketone Supplements.
.
What’s the science tell us about kambo?
.
How kambo makes you feel sick:
Phyllomedusin, phyllokinin, caerulein and sauvagine are the polypeptides in these secretions that can cause intense effects on smooth muscles, vessels provoking, nausea and vomiting, arterial hypotension, flushing, palpitations, nausea, vomiting, bile secretion and angioedema. [ref]
The intensity of reported acute psychological effects remained on a mild to moderate level, with no psychedelic-type distortions of perception or thinking. [ref]Â
.
How kambo makes you feel good:
The feeling of well-being and improvement of motor skills described by the users seems to be associated with dermorphine, caerulein or deltorphin – peptides with analgesic properties – and their affinity for the opiate receptor systems. [ref]
Longer-term effects were described as positive and pleasant, revealing high scores on measures of personal and spiritual significance. [ref]
Peptides in kambo venom of the dermaseptin family (dermaseptins B2 and B3) have shown anti-tumor effects. [ref]
.
How kambo can hurt you:
I found two studies on death [ref] and extreme acute effects [ref] from use of kambo (perhaps keeping the venom on too long?). Unfortunately there wasn’t enough information in the abstracts to determine the cause.Â
.
Is Kambo right for you?
This all depends on your status and goals. I wasn’t looking to fix any specific problems in my life. However, the opportunity presented it and my curiosity got the best of me!
Although I was experiencing extreme discomfort during the acute stages of the ceremony, afterwards, with the boost in mood, awareness and energy, I was thinking that maybe I’ll do it again!
