Why is bone broth so popular these days?

You’ve probably heard something about the benefits of bone broth like:

  • Promotes healthy skin
  • Strengthens bones
  • Kills joint pain
  • Reduces inflammation
  • Inhibits infection

But why would YOU need bone broth?

You don’t really NEED bone broth. However, it’s a simple way to get a lot of the nutrients our bodies do NEED to function well.

If you are concerned about gut issues, arthritis and even excess fat; or if you just want to avoid these things and live a longer, healthier life,  you may want to strongly consider adding bone broth to your diet.

One of the problems is that, despite the seemingly endless number of options you can find at a supermarket, you likely have a surprisingly low diversity of foods in your diet. And when you look specifically at meats and animal products, you are likely short-changing your own biology. How so?

Consider for a moment what kind of animal products you consume on a regular basis. Assuming you are eating meat (and you likely should!) then, if you are like most modern folks, you are myopically focused on almost entirely the muscle meats of animals.

Sure, you get a lot of good things out of muscle meats. But think about the rest of the animal.

What might you be missing?

Unfortunately there’s a lot to be desired from an animal that extends beyond just the muscle. Here’s what you get in bone broth: Calcium, phosphorus, and other minerals; Components of collagen and cartilage; Silicon and other trace minerals; Components of bone and bone marrow; Glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate; Essential amino acids proline, glycine, and glutamine.

And don’t forget, as mentioned above, the benefits you gain from consuming your bone broth: healthy skin, strong bones, less joint pain, less inflammation, and lower chance of infection.

What’s the solution?

Obviously, the solution is to get some bone broth in your body! How? You can buy high quality bone broth from the store. Kettle & Fire makes a very popular bone broth.

Or you can make it yourself. All you need are bones – ideally from a 100% grass-fed bovine (or other ruminant) or from a pastured chicken. You can get these from your local farmer – either at the farmers’ markets or you can find them online.

Just throw the bones in filtered water, add some apple cider vinegar and cook them slowly and gently (without boiling!) for 8 hours or more. You can then save the bones in your freezer and use them again. And again. And again…

What else can you add?

I’m glad you asked! I like to “upgrade” my bone broth by adding a pastured egg, collagen powder, butter (from grass-fed cows) and MCT oil. Here’s how:

  1. Heat your bone broth (but please not in the microwave!)
  2. Blend the broth, butter and oil until it’s fully mixed (about 10-30 seconds)
  3. Add a pastured egg (at least the yolk as there’s not much nutrients in the white)
  4. and collagen powder
Optional: ginger, cayenne, turmeric, cinnamon, vanilla, …
  5. Blend for 1-3 seconds; or shake (so as not to destroy the proteins)

What do you get by upgrading?

Butter (from grass-fed cows)

  • Protects against cancer
  • Boosts your metabolism
  • Supports heart health
  • Reduces inflammation

MCT oil

  • Supports immune function
  • Improves your mood
  • Balances your hormones
  • Improves brain function
  • Boosts energy
  • Supports a healthy weight

Eggs have been shown to

  • Maintain liver function
  • Improve brain health
  • Reduce risk of heart disease
  • Improve eye health
  • Supports a healthy weight

I think you get the idea!

I start (and sometimes end) my day with this concoction – almost religiously since my recent brain and neck injury. I need as much support for my brain and damaged muscles and ligaments as I can possibly get. So the reason why I drink my upgraded bone broth is clear: The bone broth with butter, MCT oil, collagen and egg reduces joint pain and inflammation; inhibits infection; promotes strong, healthy bones; and even promotes healthy hair and nail growth.
