How can you find and eat clean foods in MEXICO?
You want to know which markets, stores and restaurants actually sell clean foods!
But before you start buying food from stores, you can…
Grow Your Own Clean Foods
With Mexico’s diverse climates and soils, you can likely start eating clean with your own seeds, plants and animals.
Although this is a little bit out of the scope of this article, you can go here to get started with soil, seeds, plants and livestock:
- Find a fellow gardener or farmer.
- Go to the local plant market.
- Go to a local farm or ranch.
While living in Thailand, I was fortunate to have my own space (of about 1 rai) in Chiang Mai for about 2 years where we had big mature fruit trees (including mango, longan, lychee) and added our own banana, mulberry, papaya, chilis, basil, oregano, rosemary, chickens and more.

Clean Meals in Mexico
At the time of writing, I don’t know of any clean restaurant chains that you can find throughout the country. But don’t worry because there are some good options.
Although factory farmed beef isn’t the best option overall, it’s often the best I find at restaurants in Mexico (because, as you already learned here, beef is one of the cleanest and most nutrient-dense sources of food around). Generally lean cuts of beef will be cleaner because toxins tend to be stored in fat, bones, etc, whereas muscle meat doesn’t hold as many toxins.
With that, you can find clean meals with beef (and vegetables!) in a variety of Mexican dishes including:
- Soups and broths (caldos) with
- Beef (caldo de res)
- Fish (caldo de pescado)
- Guacamole (without chips)
- Ceviche and Cocteles
- Beef / Steak dishes including
- Carne de res (beef)
- Bistec (grilled steak)
- Carne asada (steak – ask for no oil)
- Arrachera (skirt steak)
- Tasajo (dried salted flank steak)
- Barbacoa (goat, sheep or cow)
- Lengua (cow’s tongue)
- Suadero (like beef brisket)
- Argentina and Brazilian Steak
- Japanese
- Rice Poke Bowls
Although uncommon, I’ve even come across some clean and healthy meals at vegan and vegetarian stores and restaurants.
What do you say to get clean food in Mexico?
If you don’t know the language, you can use these phrases:
- No oil:
sin aceite - No sugar:
sin azucar - No milk:
sin leche - No tortilla:
sin tortilla - No chips:
sin totopes
