How can you find and eat clean foods in Thailand?
You want to know which markets, stores and restaurants actually sell clean foods!
But before you start buying food from stores, you can…
Grow Your Own Clean Foods
With Thailand’s tropical climate and rich soil, you can simply start with your own seeds, plants and animals.
Although this is a little bit out of the scope of this article, you can go here to get started with soil, seeds, plants and livestock:
- Find a fellow gardener or farmer.
- Go to the local plant market.
- Go to a Royal Project shop.
- Go to a local farm or ranch.
I was fortunate to have my own space (of about 1 rai) in Chiang Mai for about 2 years where we had big mature fruit trees (including mango, longan, lychee) and added our own banana, mulberry, papaya, chilis, basil, oregano, rosemary, chickens and more.

Clean Meals in Thailand
I don’t know of any restaurant chains that you can find throughout the country. There are some good options in general terms.
Although factory farmed beef isn’t the best option overall, it’s often the best I find at restaurants in Thailand (because, as you already learned here, beef is one of the cleanest and most nutrient-dense sources of food around). Generally lean cuts of beef will be cleaner because toxins tend to be stored in fat, bones, etc, whereas muscle meat doesn’t hold as many toxins.
With that, you can find clean meals with beef (and vegetables!) in a variety of restaurants including:
- Japanese
- Shabu
- Noodle (soups/broths)
- Street grills
To keep it clean(er), you can ask for the meats without sauce (“mai saa”).
In Chiang Mai:
- Salad Concept
- Healthy Junk
- Free Bird Cafe
Here’s a google map (not mine) that has some good clean and healthy options.
What do you say to get clean food in Thailand?
If you don’t know the language, you can use these phrases:
- Do you have beef:
mee newa mai - No oil:
mai sai namman - No sugar:
mai sai namtan - No milk:
mai sai nom - No sauce:
mai sai saa
