How do I get rid of diabetes?
Unfortunately, there’s no guaranteed cure for diabetes, especially Type 1.
However, there are ways to effectively manage diabetes and for many with Type 2, achieve remission.
(I share the one simplest solution I know at the end.)
Let’s break it down:
Manage Type 1 Diabetes
- This is an autoimmune disease where the body doesn’t produce insulin.
- Management focuses on:
- Insulin therapy (injections or a pump)
- Blood sugar monitoring
- Healthy diet & regular exercise
Put Type 2 Diabetes in Remission
- The body doesn’t produce enough insulin or use it effectively.
- Testing: Measure and understand: blood sugar, hba1c, insulin, triglycerides and c-reactive protein. Over time, with the lifestyle changes below, these numbers will improve.
- Management strategies:
- Lifestyle changes: Sunlight, sleep, mindset, healthy eating, and exercise are critical.
- Medications: Only when necessary to improve blood sugar, insulin sensitivity or production, or other health issues.
- Remission: With significant lifestyle changes, some people can achieve long-term remission where blood sugar remains in a healthy range without medication.
Important Considerations for Diabetes:
- Find people and info you trust. Information even from medical practitioners can be harmful.
- Even in remission, Type 2 diabetes can reoccur. Maintaining healthy habits is vital.
What You Can Do to Manage or Put Diabetes (type 2) in Remission
Consult Knowledgeable People and Trusted Resources
Get a diagnosis, understand your specific diabetes type, and discuss treatment options – keeping in mind that few doctors are trained in lifestyle changes to effectively reverse diabetes.
Prioritize Lifestyle
This is crucial for everyone – and will help keep insulin and blood sugar in balance:
- Sunlight: Getting adequate sunlight improves both mood and metabolic health. Get sunlight on your body as early as possible and throughout the day.
- Sleep: Prioritize quality sleep. Wake with the sun and turn out the (artificial) lights at night.
- Mindset: Many practices reduce stress by calming the mind and body. You can try things like yoga, meditation and breathwork.
- Healthy Eating: Focus on whole foods with quality protein and fats. Limit processed options and carbohydrates.
- Exercise: Aim for regular physical activity by keeping your body moving throughout the day.
Explore Resources
Reliable information can help you make the right choices:
- Find practitioners who focus on lifestyle changes as their primary tools.
- These can be doctors and/or coaches trained in lifestyle interventions.
Remember: Diabetes management is a continuous journey. Work closely with your team of experts, stay informed, and adapt your approach as needed to live a healthy life!
How do I get rid of diabetes?
Here’s my simple solution to put type 2 diabetes into remission:
Fasting.
Fasting Strategies
Spending less time eating can help. Here’s how to start:
- Micro Fasting: Wait until you’re truly hungry (~4 hours) to have meals, and avoid snacking.
- Intermittent Fasting (IF): Choose an eating window (from 1 to 11 hours) and only consume water outside of it.
- Longer fasts: Going longer periods without food.
The key is to start small and work your way up to a fasting schedule that works for you.
The Challenge: Fasting can be tough.
If you want a structured, supported option, consider:
Fasting Mimicking Diet (FMD)
This provides specially designed meals to help your body reap fasting-like benefits while staying nourished.
