How fasting saves my life…

Hi, I’m Jason Ryer. I’m a trained health professional and biohacker, with knowledge and access to the best tools for hacking health, and upgrading human performance. 

I admit saying that fasting saves my life is a bit extreme … but I think it makes for a catchy headline! And now that I have your attention, I want to share with you my story around fasting:

I was a skinny guy on the “See Food” diet

First off, I want to put things into perspective. You see, I’ve spent my entire life being what you might call a Skinny Guy. Or a Toothpick. A Rail. Chicken Legs. Thin. Lean. Undernourished. Emaciated. Scrawny. Skeletal. Scraggy. Bony. Gaunt. Lanky. Slender. Skin-and-bone. A Twig. Underweight. You get the idea. As such, I was on what I call the “See Food Diet”. That’s right: I see it; I eat it. Anything and everything. I thought that, because I was skinny, I could get away with eating anything. I assumed I was healthy and invincible.

Was I having a heart attack?Then, a few years ago, I started to feel pains in my chest. Fast and irregular heart beats. WTF!? Heart attack symptoms? That couldn’t be possible. I’m a skinny guy! Plus… I had big energy slumps during the day when I felt tired – usually after eating. And I often experienced bloating and gas which caused something I later learned is commonly referred to as “brain fog”. I thought all of this was just a normal effect from eating!

Is being vegan the answer?Like many people who have health issues, I wasn’t really sure where to go or what to do. I coincidentally learned about all the (supposed) benefits of a plant-based / vegetarian / vegan diet. I didn’t want to take any chances with my health and I was open to trying new things. So I dove in! (Just don’t tell the vegetarians…but I did eat meat every once in a while!) And guess what happened on this new plant-based diet? The chest pains pretty much went away. Phew! No need to panic. But there was another thing… …after two years being vegan, my libido seemed to be disappearing. That’s right, low sex drive.

I got “tested” and here’s what I found…I did something really smart at the time. It cost me a LOT of money…I decided it was worth it to get a full blood panel done. And guess what I found? I was in VERY good health. Except for a few relatively minor things, mainly that I was above the normal range for ESTROGEN with low TESTOSTERONE.
